It takes a while before to take it serious. In this case even a couple of years. But now, the decision has been taken to create the Institute of Cartopology. A fall-out base for cartopologists. The Institute of Cartopology supports cartopologists in undertaking expeditions through knowledge development, network building and knowledge sharing. It archives, activates but for mostly shares and generates knowledge about Cartopology.
In 2018 I read ‘THE SCOPE OF ANTHROPOLOGY’. The inaugural lecture of Claude Lévi-Strauss at the Chair of Social Anthropology, Collège de France on the 5th of January in 1960. The lecture starts with: ‘It was little more than a year ago, in 1958, that the Collège de France took the decision to create in its midst a chair of social anthropology.’1
The resemblance between the previous paragraphs is indicative and not for nothing. Suddenly I realized that disciplines, chairs and institutes have all been established at a certain point! From 2018 onwards the urgency and possibility to build up the Institute of Cartopology was born and measures have been taken ever since.
BEYOND MY OWN PRACTICE
What started somewhat hesitantly has become the backbone of my PhD-project: building up the Institute of Cartopology as an artistic research strategy. There are different kinds of artistic research strategies, each with their own standards and values. Some of them focus on the visualization of academic research, other approaches centralize the autonomous artistic practice, while others try to theorize the art practice. Research through, by or in the making, the variations are countless. That in itself is characteristic for artistic research. Each research project, method and approach is unique and inextricably linked to the practice of the artistic researcher and will therefor vary from any other artistic research project. The Institute of Cartopology is no exception. The aim is also to get a better understanding of my own artistic practice. However, the Institute of Cartopology is even so committed to practicing cartopology, born from an individual artistic research practice, available and shareable. Setting up the Institute of Cartopology forces to think about Cartopology beyond the borders of my own practice. It pushes to be generous and to question the immediate applicability and urgency of cartopology as a discipline.
